Your BMI results provide a measurement of your thickness or thinness. Health professionals frequently use this number to assess any potential weight issues you may have. However, BMI is a simple way to classify a person’s body composition status and therefore only provides a bird’s eye view. It is best used when combined with other health data to make your results as useful as possible.
Obesity has been linked to all sorts of health issues and disease, including cancer. At Pink Lotus, our main focus is on breast cancer, which also has a direct correlation to obesity. A higher BMI means that you likely have increased fat reserves, which in turn contain enzymes that convert other steroids into estrogen (yes, even in post-menopausal women). Estrogen fuels approximately 80% of breast cancer, so excess estrogen increases risk. The higher your BMI and fat stores, the more you turn your body into a breast cancer hospitable environment.
Decreasing your BMI to healthy levels can be accomplished in a variety of ways. For the fastest path to a healthy BMI, eliminate all trans-fats and limit saturated fat found in all meats (red meat, turkey, chicken, fish), dairy and eggs. Consume whole food plant based nutrition with fruits, vegetables, 100% whole grains, and legumes (lentils, beans, peas). Exercise moderately 5 hours a week, or vigorously for 2.5 hours a week.
